Development of General Framework for Uncertainty Analysis and Decision Making under Uncertainty

Uncertainty exists in almost all engineering models describing technologies in early phases of research and development. Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) systems represent a new generation of coal-fueled power generation technologies which however have not been demonstrated at a commercial scale. Significant uncertainties remain regarding the technical and economic performance of IGCC systems. Failure to fully account for uncertainties may result in misleading estimates of the process performance and cost. This suggests a strong need for systematic and explicit analysis of uncertainty in evaluating alternative technologies.
